Their scientific name is Dacelo. They were named for their laughing sound. They are also known as 'Laughing Jackass', 'Laughing kookaburra'.
SCIENTIFIC CLASSIFICATION
Laughing kingfishers belong to the family Alcedinidae and the genus of Dacelo. It is a species of the kingfisher. There are 2 sub-species in the world. Their conservation status is 'Least Concern'. They have a large population, with no widespread threats
HABITAT & LIVING LOCATION
Laughing kingfisher is found in Eastern Australia, New Zealand. They are habitats such as woodlands, open forests, cities, gardens.
APPEARANCE
They have a whitish head and brown eye-stripe. Their upperparts are mostly dark brown colored and Their underparts are cream-white colored. The tail is barred with rufous and black. The appearance of the male and female birds is similar. An adult length around 41 cm to 47 cm and the wingspan up to 56 cm to 66 cm. The male weighs 196 g to 450 g and the female 190 g to 465 g. They can fly at speed of up to 32 km/h.
DIET
Laughing kingfisher is mainly part of the Carnivore diet, which means they eat meats. They mostly eat fishes, insects, reptiles, frogs, rodents.

Their lifespan up to 20 years in the wild. Laughing kingfisher is diurnal and solitary birds. But sometimes they live in a small group.
BREED
At the age of 11 to 12 months males and females, are ready to sexually mature. After the incubation period lasts around 26 days. Laughing kingfisher lay one to five eggs in a breeding season. The young are called 'Chick'. Those young spend 10 weeks with their mothers.
